As a professional estimator I generally have to be closer than that. HOWEVER, when it comes to "honey dew" projects the rule of thumb is twice as long to do with a 20% cost overrun. Plumbing projects are totally ad lib and are only limited by infinite time and space along with someone's life savings.
not me...I just do it..ha
I never estimate on personal projects. I pick away at them until they either get done or die of boredom.
