Serious journalism

Long, long ago in a galaxy far away I was part of the staff of a small town daily newspaper.  There are days when I miss some aspects of that job, like writing headlines, especially when I see news items like this:

Environmentalists Seek to Wipe Out Plush Toilet Paper
Soft Toilet Paper's Hard on the Earth, But Will We Sit for the Alternative?

  1. This made me laugh - you are so right about the fun one could have writing headlines for stories like these!

And then I read the article and thought a bit about our pampered American butts. Are we really such hedonistic selfish bastards that we have to destroy rainforests every time we use the toilet?

And then I had to wonder why I have to feel guilty for using toilet paper now, when it is, at most, 5% of the "problem" with deforestation.

Ay yi yi. Some days, it's all a bit much, isn't it?

As usual, Nan, your blog is fun and informative.

So I did a little shout-out for you on my blog today. (I hope that's ok with you.)

    Have a great day!

  2. And I'm here because of the shout out... but this headline is so ripe as a straight line, I'm suffering performance anxiety and can't come up with anything!

  3. I guess the standards are slipping everywhere. I know were I in such a position, I would likely do the same silly stuff.
